It started with spending a few hours teaching a robot named Karel to navigate a screen, but quickly escalated to thousands of hours where I built an AI that beat me at board games, trained a neural net in high school, and even launched a Twitter clone on crypto rails (it raised a bit of funding before it shut it down).\r\n\r\nI studied computer science for eight years and spent every college summer in the Bay Area, eventually moving to San Francisco right after graduation. For as long as I can remember, it’s been clear to me that few things shape the world more profoundly than technology.\r\n\r\nVenture has always felt like a dream job. and the global financial crisis of 2007–2008. Widespread bankruptcies and layoffs made palpable how difficult the startup journey is for founders and how essential it is to keep the macro in mind as you scale. Since then, I’ve found that this growth mindset applies to most facets of life. Rather than isolating risks and failures, I strive to identify potential and tackle challenges through collaborative problem solving.  \r\n\r\nAs an investor, the sectors I work in exist at inflection points that are truly historic. An onslaught of data paired with the transition to cloud is transforming the software landscape. Threat vectors in security are increasing in scope and severity. The shift from PC to mobile to AI platforms is generating persistent evolution in consumer experiences. And healthcare is forever changed by COVID-19. Playing even a small part as a partner to the companies most likely to transform these industries is incredibly meaningful to me.  \r\n\r\nOver the years, I’ve found that the best founders are exceptional by definition—no two are the same. Some are introverts, others extroverts; some are operationally detailed, others are strategic masterminds. What all successful founders share is unwavering commitment and perseverance. After spending a few very cold winters in New Hampshire and graduating from Dartmouth College with a liberal arts degree, I couldn’t wait to head back to the West Coast to start my first real job at a technology-focused investment bank in San Francisco, helping to take the early “Internet 1.0” generation of client-server software and consumer internet companies public. This exposure to mission-driven entrepreneurs had a huge and immediate impact on my career. I first learned about venture capital in 1973 while studying engineering at Stanford, and I immediately decided I wanted to be a VC. Most encouraged me to continue my education, so I proceeded to study both business and law to ready myself for the path ahead. \r\n\r\nI began my career writing code as a software engineer at Hewlett Packard. Later, I served as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company.  In 1989, I joined Reid Dennis and Mary Jane Elmore at IVP, where I founded the later-stage and public market investment group.
